What to Pack for a City -Mini Break in Autumn

Woman in a natural beige trench coat with a suitcase, ready for a city mini break packing guide

As someone who’s travelled solo and learned the art of packing light, I know how tempting it is to overpack “just in case.” But trust me—packing smart saves you money, time, and stress. Most people return from a trip with unworn clothes, and with airlines charging more than ever for checked bags (looking at you, Ryanair), hand luggage is your best friend.

When it comes to packing for a mini break, think of your suitcase as a mini capsule wardrobe: every piece should work together, giving you options without the excess. By focusing on versatile, mix-and-match essentials in your best colours and fabrics, you’ll have outfits for every occasion—without weighing yourself down. It’s all about curating, not cramming, so you can travel lighter and still feel stylish and confident wherever you go.

This post is focused on packing for an autumn city break—one of my favourite times to travel, thanks to crisp mornings, cosy layers, and those beautiful autumnal colours! Packing for autumn is a lot like packing for spring: it’s all about layering and being ready for anything the weather throws your way. But if you’re heading off in the depths of winter or the height of summer, you’ll want to adapt your list—so keep an eye out for my upcoming seasonal packing guides.

Before You Pack: Check Airline Rules

  • Hand luggage isn’t always free: Ryanair, easyJet, and others often charge extra for anything beyond a small under-seat bag. Sometimes, adding a checked bag when you book is actually cheaper than paying for a slightly bigger cabin bag later.

  • Know your limits: Double-check dimensions and weight for your airline. Ryanair’s “Priority” gets you a small wheelie and a personal item; otherwise, it’s one tiny bag.

  • Plan your travel outfit: Wear your bulkiest shoes and outerwear to save space.

Packing Rules for a Mini Break

  • Pack as little as possible: Lay out everything you want to bring, then halve it.

  • Travel in your heaviest/bulkiest pieces: Think trainers, jeans, a cosy knit, and a trench or waterproof jacket (ideally with a hood for those autumn showers).

  • Keep your colour palette tight: Neutrals and a couple of accent colours make mixing and matching easy. (If you’ve had a colour analysis, this is your moment to shine!) Adding one of our beautiful Olivia scarves—created with your unique colouring in mind—will not only keep you warm on those crisp autumn days but also gives you that perfect pop of colour. Choose a scarf in one of your best shades to instantly lift your outfits and tie your whole look together.

  • Decant toiletries: Use travel bottles. Most hotels and Airbnbs provide basics. Remember to pack them into a clear plastic bag if you are heading through airline security.

  • Toiletries travel hack: If you’re running low on time or space, you can always buy travel-sized toiletries after you get through airport security—just remember, airport shops add a premium. A clever alternative? Order your favourites online from a retailer like Boots or Superdrug and use their “Click & Collect” service at the airport or a shop near your departure point. That way, you save money and guarantee you get exactly what you want.

  • Mini toiletries for a cause: Choose small bottles you can use up while travelling, then either leave them behind for the next guest (if unopened) or pass them on to someone who might need them.

  • Streamline your make-up: Pack just one lipstick, a versatile eyeshadow (our magnetic palettes are perfect for saving space), mascara, and a mini perfume. I’m a big fan of those handbag-sized travel refills you can pick up affordably at most perfumeries—so handy and chic. That’s all you need—done!

  • Jewellery: Wear your everyday pieces; keep extras minimal and lightweight.

  • Underwear: Pack enough for the trip, but remember you can wash things overnight if needed.

  • Handbag: Choose one that fits essentials and can double as an evening clutch.

And a quick tip from personal experience: autumn weather can be unpredictable, so always check the forecast before you go and look up typical weather for your destination. I once got caught out by a very rainy November in Rome—lesson learned!

If you’re planning a trip in another season, don’t worry—I’ll be sharing more city break packing guides for spring, summer, and winter soon. Each season brings its own packing challenges (trust me, winter and summer are a whole different ballgame!), so stay tuned for more tips.

Enjoy your trip, and bon voyage!
